Worst fake American accent of all time?

Daniel Day-Lewis and Damian Lewis have both proved that British actors CAN do quite convincing American accents, but Hunnam's attempts are pathetic in Sons of Anarchy (and I'm not even American). He seems to be getting even worse at it as the series progresses. The guy couldn't act his was out of a wet paper bag.

I guess it's true that being born blonde and handsome will get a person anywhere in life.

Hi IlkeToWatchItWatchIt,

I'm an American and I don't think his accent is bad. A number of people have gone on the Sons of Anarchy board to express their shock at discovering he's a Brit. I also think Charlie took chances in his career by downplaying his blond looks. He's unrecognizable in films like Children of Men and Cold Mountain. Charlie had numerous opportunities to capitalize on his looks and didn't take them. Though you don't think he can act, a lot of us disagree with you.

It's not the worst, but I did not know he was a Brit before watching sons and actually turned to my wife and said this guy cannot be American with that accent, and I was right.

Do you actually believe that he's large and in charge and get to decides what his look will be on the projects he's hired to perform in?

He's merely another actor. Not an executive producer. He's just a hired hand. He doesn't call the shots.

Hi jnrobbins,

He deliberately accepted roles that downplayed his looks and nearly derailed his career. He could have gone the CW route like Ian Somerhalder and traded on his looks, but chose to make in film instead. He didn't work for over a year after Cold Mountain, turned to screenwriting.

While I agree he is another actor and doesn't executive produce his projects like Leonardo DiCaprio, he's fairly picky about the roles. This isn't the old studio system, he's a free agent like every actor working today. He could have stayed with Fifty Shades of Grey, but realized it wasn't for him and pulled out.

reply

I see what you mean.

But what I meant is that once he's accepted a part, he must do what he's told.

reply

Hi jnrobbins,

Certainly, if he accepts a role, he has to follow direction. I'm interested to see what he does in his newest film, a Victorian-era Gothic horror.

Sometimes when I'm watching SOA,I can hear his accent a little ,but its not enough to bother me. It's in those scenes when he's really emotional and raises his voice. His accent isn't bad.

reply

Hi ruck15,

I rarely hear the accent. It's a bit Canadian at times but has never has bothered me.
