I find Don Henley's pretension to be insufferable

Sure I like some of his songs, but after I've heard "Welcome To The Hotel California" for the millionth time, with the obtuse and oblique lyrics that ultimately lead to nothing, and he sings all the significant songs in a band that has great singers, I just get tired of him.
He's worse than Sting. Sting is pretentious but has a deeper well of jazz music to draw from.
Henley just hammers you with a hook and a narrative not many want to dissect.

At least with both Sting and Don you have two self-taught musicians who earned their bones in the business. You compare the both of them to today's praised rock stars and you see night and day

Yes, both Sting and Don are professionals and I know they have earned most of what they have received.
Sometimes I like some of their music, but it seems freighted with their preoccupations.
Sting needs his cultivated persona, Don needs his differently cultivated persona.
I like Sting a little bit more (and if I build this fortress around your heart) than Don (I saw a Deadhead sticker on a Cadillac.)
They both annoy me, but Sting seems to be striving for something more.

They are both "Alpha males", different makeup from some of the laid back semi stoner musicians of the period.

Sting was so disgusted with his band mates (Andy Summers) song on Zenyetta Mondetta (Behind My Camel), that he actually buried the track in dirt near the studio. (In his defense it is a horrible song, 🙂)
