That isn't even true, and even if it was, so what?
Lots of people went to see Suicide Squad and that was abysmally bad. Just because something isn't "popular", that doesn't mean it's bad.
End of Watch, Prisoners, Nightcrawler, Zodiac, all of these are movies that belong to the "definitely great" movies. Enemy is different: I personnally loved it but can see why people would be left "WTF?" in the end (but I love mind-screwing stuff, so...)
The guy prefers versatile and more interesting material acting-wise rather than play in a blockbuster? I don't see the issue here. And he probably doesn't either, since he continues veering towards those kind of movies.

Loved Zodiac and Source Code, yeah I have to say I haven't been liking much of his other stuff. Demolition was okay, but its unlikely that I'd watch it again.

I agree with the OP Brokeback Mountain made Jake a star but Nightcrawler showed the world he can act. Nightcrawler he definitely deserved an award for that one. BUT he has also tried to become a leading man in big budget films but he seems more of a supporting actor to be honest.
