While I'd much rather see an unknown do the role, I'd almost like to see the software activist (and founder of the GNU project) Richard Stallman take on the role. Too bad he's 55. I think he certainly looks the part (despite his beard) - and has the visionary temperament. I doubt he'd appreciate being suggested though!
I'd like to think the late rock critic Lester Bangs might have been able to pull it off, but I'm probably fooling myself, though he certainly could write a funny diatribe.
Perhaps neither, but at least both are/were very passionate about their interests.
Will Ferrell? Are you kidding?
Vincent D'Onofrio? Perhaps.
Dare I suggest Kevin Smith? Though I'd certainly give David Schramm a chance (if he were around 30).
One 2002 article suggested that Phillip Seymour Hoffman was a front runner. (Well, he did portray Lester Bangs in 'Almost Famous'.) Another person was Brendan Gleeson, though he's a little old.
If this film ever gets made I'd just be afraid that whoever takes on Ignatius would give a 'one-note' (instead of a nuanced) portrayal (well, I guess Kevin Smith is out), much less getting a worthy supporting cast.
I almost don't want to see it completed, given these problems, unless somehow everything came together like it did for 'Animal House'.
