Other films D.G.G. fans like?

The first film I caught of D.G.G.'s was All The Real Girls which I was impressed by. I bought the criterion edition of George Washington and relly enjoyed it too.

He has a very personal approach - his films are uneventful and poetic, but still absorbing. As he has very much an acquired taste, I wanted to ask...

If you like this film, what other movies do you like? I'm thinking more specifically of similar films, maybe top 5's or something, just out of interest.

Thanks...

Days of Heaven by Terrence Malick was a huge influence on Green, and you can deffinately see the similarities between that movie and Green's movies (specially George Washington.)

Malick has a definate sensibility which is similar to G.G.G. Malick is obviously a huge influence, intentionally or otherwise, though Malick was a producer on Undertow so obviously there is some connection there.

You should check out the films by the british director Lynne Ramsay. Her stuff has a very similar feel to Green's.

Though I'm sure a lot of people would disagree, I think there are a lot of similarities between DGG's movies and older Merchant/Ivory films. I think that All the Real Girls and The Remains of the Day (and surprisingly The 40-Year-Old Virgin) have the most realistic characters/interactions ever portrayed on film.

I would also have to say that All the Real Girls and The Sweet Hereafter have a very similar mood. They both portray a very personal and personable small town feel that usually comes across as so artificial and either condescending or overly-romanticized on film.

Magnolia (and all the rest of Paul Thomas Anderson's work...though I haven't seen Boogie Nights) has the same intricate and natural feel of ATRG. It also has some amazing cinematography.

Personally, I don't think Green is as much like Malick as everyone claims. They're both really good with dialogue...that's about as far as it goes.

Okay, so to give you my top five:
1) The Remains of the Day
2) All the Real Girls
3) The Sweet Hereafter
4) An American Werewolf in London
5) The Messenger: The Story of Joan of Arc (The most misinterpreted film of all time; I attribute this film's failure and the fact that it is so despised to nothing short of an international brainwashing conspiracy... but that's for another post)
