Though I'm sure a lot of people would disagree, I think there are a lot of similarities between DGG's movies and older Merchant/Ivory films. I think that All the Real Girls and The Remains of the Day (and surprisingly The 40-Year-Old Virgin) have the most realistic characters/interactions ever portrayed on film.
I would also have to say that All the Real Girls and The Sweet Hereafter have a very similar mood. They both portray a very personal and personable small town feel that usually comes across as so artificial and either condescending or overly-romanticized on film.
Magnolia (and all the rest of Paul Thomas Anderson's work...though I haven't seen Boogie Nights) has the same intricate and natural feel of ATRG. It also has some amazing cinematography.
Personally, I don't think Green is as much like Malick as everyone claims. They're both really good with dialogue...that's about as far as it goes.
Okay, so to give you my top five:
1) The Remains of the Day
2) All the Real Girls
3) The Sweet Hereafter
4) An American Werewolf in London
5) The Messenger: The Story of Joan of Arc (The most misinterpreted film of all time; I attribute this film's failure and the fact that it is so despised to nothing short of an international brainwashing conspiracy... but that's for another post)
