How did he raise $42,000 for his first feature George Washington?

Anybody know? David was 24 when he made his impressive film debut.

I've heard that he raised a good portion by "working". Don't know what job he was working but I assume it was in the film industry.

There is an interview somewhere where he said he worked at a doorknob factory. He also mentions having a few jobs in the film industry, even selling a few scripts, but I don't know if that was before George Washington.

I fortunately got to meet him last night. He said that he did a lot of random work. One, which was stated earlier, was working at his ex-girlfriend's dad's doorknob factory. Then he did a lot of random things like participated in a study and had to wear a diaper on his back for a few weeks to see if he would get any rashes from it. This job earned him $300. But he said all the money he made he put in the stock market, which got him the $40,000 that much quicker. DGG said it only took him 9 months to raise the money. If I remember any of the other funny jobs that he told us I will let you know.

Wow, that is fascinating, ShroudOfFrost. Thanks so much for the info. As a filmmaker I am always curious as to how directors fund their first films. I bet David was really approachable and humble. He seems to radiate that in interviews. So cool.

Oh yeah, DGG was one of the coolest guys I have met. One of the guys told him after the show that his party was about to start he he said "ok i'll be there soon," then turned to my friend and I and started a conversation. He was pretty funny as well. But as for raising money, I'm a filmmaker as well so I'm constantly looking for ideas to raise money as well. Have you read "Rebel Without a Crew"? Robert Rodriguez talks about raising money for El Mariachi while trying to support himself and his wife. Keep in mind he only raised $5,000, but it's interesting and helpful nonetheless.

I certainly was. It was incredible to see the kids up on stage 10 years later. They were all really cool. My friend and I stopped by and talked to them and DGG after everything. All of them are great people. Did you wait around to chat with any of them?
