In a different league.....

Only lately have I realised that this guy could just be an actor in different league in coming years. He has given some highly intriguing movies and they are of some rare qualities. Every genre he has acted in has been quite remarkable. He seems to take his movies quite seriously. Admire his hard work.

I think he is making conscious efforts to stretch his range, and IMO at least, I think he gets away with it.

Some people say he's not versatile, but within the last few years, he's played a young version of Bruce Willis (Looper), a "New Joizey" womanizer and porn addict (Don Jon), Philippe Petit (The Walk), and Edward Snowden (Snowden).

In all of them, his demeanor and voice/accent is completely different. Petit is nothing like Snowden, personality-wise, and neither of them is anything like Don Jon.

Even in his earlier young adult career, he did varied stuff like Mysterious Skin, Brick, and The Lookout. He's played a cancer patient, a man with brain damage, a gay prostitute, etc.

He's not quite at the level where he can be called a chameleon (but he might get there one day if he keeps working at it), but I think he plays more of a range of characters than some people give him credit for.
