Three Oscars for one movie!?

Sure he is a great director and Birdman was a good movie, but there are far better directors who have fewer Oscars(or none at all) who are much better directors(Nolan, Scorsese just to name a few). You can tell by watching his movies that his main interest is to win Oscars, and congratulations to him, 3 Oscars you lucky son of a bitch! His upcoming movie The Revenant looks really good though, I'm looking forward to that one.

In all fairness he Wrote the Screenplay, He Directed and produced the movie.

The problem with the directors you named is they just Direct. They don't add anything to the Script
Some don't produce it.

I do think that Alejandro only deserved 2. Screenplay should have gone to Grand Budapest

Scorsese wrote Goodfellas, Casino and Mean Streets. Christopher Nolan wrote/co-wrote pretty much all his films if you look on here. Scorsese should have won a few Oscars on Goodfellas (direction, production, writing).

It would have been nice if they gave one of them to Linklater for Boyhood.

Actually Nolan writes the script and the screenplay together with his brother Jonathan for all his movies, he also produces them. For example he got Oscar nominated for Best Screenplay for both Memento and Inception. So no, Nolan does much much more than just directing. Scorsese on the other hand, yes that might be true.

Nolan isn't better than Inarritu, he's popular sure, but apart from Memento and the Dark Knight I struggle to call any of his films a masterpiece. Inarritu has made only five films so far and each of them are fantastic. Now Scorsese is arguably the best director working today and should have at least six oscars under his belt (for Taxi Driver, Raging Bull, 2 for Goodfellas writing and directing, The Aviator, and The Departed), but only has one. Anyway, luck plays a part in every award races and the Oscars isn't an exception.

Raging Bull = Best movie

LOL you think Nolan is better than Alejandro?
Holy crap.

reply

Yes, how could they give it to Redford for Ordinary People over Scorsese for Raging Bull? I liked Ordinary People a lot, but the direction in Raging Bull was so inventive at the time. Also, Taxi Driver of course. Scorsese should realistically have 4 directing Oscars (Taxi Driver, Raging Bull, Goodfellas, Departed). He should have other Oscars for writing Goodfellas and producing. Raging Bull and Goodfellas not winning Best Picture the years they came out seems criminal. I also liked The Aviator a lot. Leo's best lead performance I still think.

Well, I'm biased since Raging Bull is my favorite film of all time, but I still standby that giving best picture + director to Ordinary People over Raging Bull is absolute insanity. I mean you have this incredible drama about a despicable man that still manages to be one of the most interesting character pieces in film history on one hand, and then you have a rather soap-operaish melodrama on the other. I swear it is like Terms of Endearment vs, The Right Stuff all over again, but in a much worse degree. I'm really glad Academy has gotten out of awarding these bland, award-baiting epics over more interesting and edgy films like the ones Scorsese makes.

Raging Bull = Best movie
