Anna made to do PSA's in an American accent??? (Disgusting)

I just saw this on ABC here in the states. It's one thing for a foreign actress to do an accent, but to force her to also do one as HERSELF (the ACTRESS) in an appeal for women to get mammograms is disgusting. They made Damian Lewis do the SAME thing for NBC. It's nauseating. This is paramount to redubbing Bob The Builder and Noddy just so American kids need not be bothered by the native accents.

I can see where you're coming from. I don't fully agree with it, but I'm sure it's the advertisers saying, "We want the audience to connect with your character, if your English accent shocks them they may be turned off." Personally it was a huge turn on when I found out she was British... I just found out like thirty minutes ago really. But they are in a way connecting to the audience through the characters that they watch. It makes sense from an advertiser's point of view... and you know how they are.

She is the one who decided to abandon the UK to permanently move to the US. It's entirely her decision.

We weren't discussing that, just that she spoke in an American accent while speaking as herself.

She hasn't abandoned the UK, what an absurd thing to say. She moved to the US for a job, she hasn't emigrated. If she had abandoned the UK it would seem odd that she hires a nanny from her hometown of Rochdale, in Northern England, to maintain her daughter's English accent so she doesn't lose ties with her true roots.

However, back on topic...

I can see why this type of campaign needs people with American accents so audiences can connect with the subject matter rather than be distracted by the accent. Especially since most American reactions to Anna being British is "OMG REALLY? I HAD NO IDEA!" so it is likely this would just distract people. Saying that an audience would be turned off by any other accent than American is, I would hope, inaccurate. But if it is true, then that doesn't say much for Americans...

Which brings me to redubbing Bob The Builder and Noddy... that really is stupid, and the sort of thing that gives Americans a reputation for idiocy where the rest of the world 'existing' is concerned. Really, is it SO awful for kids to be aware of other cultures, customs and indeed accents?
Britain is another country and we are certainly very different to Americans; I think American kids would benefit from learning these differences like British kids learn A LOT about American differences through watching your, might I add, unedited programming.

It's the same nonsesne when it comes to the Harry Potter books too; in that the series needs a British (and rest of the world) editor, and then an American editor to Americanize everything. Really, would it KILL Americans to learn a few of our terms and customs? No, it would probably do the future of America GOOD for their children to learn that there are other countries out there and that respecting their differences rather than steamrolling over them is an essential life skill.

Whatever dude. Anna is amazing, she has talents, and if she does something that appeals to the majority of her fans... then so be it. If you happen to be in the minority? then count yourself as unique and fortunate, but don't complain and knock good talent nor good-natured caring... not to mention her ability to see beyond the myopic view of things.

You're great, don't doubt it; you know who you are...
