British actress Anna Friel found it hard to find work when she moved to the U.S. - because she refused to lose weight for roles.

The naturally slender star landed the lead role in hit drama series Pushing Daisies in 2007, but the 31-year-old admits it had previously been a struggle to land a job in America - because she didn't want to slim down.

And Friel insists that when one TV chief ordered her to cut doughnuts out of her diet, she turned him down.

She says, "I told him he could have me or a model without a brain. The obsession with weight today is just incredible. Curves have gone out of the window and I don't understand it."

That's crazy! This is a perfect example of Hollywood impressing an impossible image on women to look better just by being thinner.

Also, I see a contradiction within that article. If she's naturally slender, how come she had to lose weight?

It wasn't a contradiction.
Hollywood is so obsessed with stars being thin that a naturally slender body is not enough. Slender isn't thin enough anymore.

A few months ago, Emma Thompson threatened to quit "Brideshead Revisited" when Miramax Films asked Hayley Atwell to lose a few pounds, and they stopped asking Gotta love these strong willed ladies from across the Pond Hopefully a few of the American beauties will see and take a stand too.

Anna Friel has never been ANYTHING but the slim side of average. EVER!

The fact that she was asked to lose weight is enough to make you despair of what sort of influence Hollywood has on the young.
