The Look of Love .... OH DEAR

Anna Friel .... oh dear

Nothing sadder, cinematically speaking, then seeing a potentially great film score an own goal with a major case of miscasting. Coogan and Winterbottom have great pedigree and I had great hopes for this but everytime the out of her depth Friel was on screen, stumbling through her scenes and failing to convince herself/fellow cast members, let alone the audience, with her performance ... well it was embarassing. Unless the character ON screen has a lot in common with Friel OFF screen (accent, look, age) then Im afraid shes totally lost, she can only ever be an extension of herself sadly. Her career has been built on luck rather then ability, her offscreen dating rather then her onscreen performances, a clear case of box office poison.

Wow, you've been posting rubbish about Friel for quite a few years now, it seems. She still haven't replied to your love letters, I guess? :D

reply

Just proves that time, sadly, hasnt improved her questionable talents. Never written a love letter in my life, my wife can atest to that.

Actually, not to rain on your parade (or tirade, as the case may be), in the interviews that both Steve Coogan and Michael Winterbottom gave for Flicks and the City (available on YouTube), they both claimed that Jean was actually very much like Anna Friel, herself. Jean is from northern England and she works in the arts, like Anna, but beyond the obvious, Michael explained that Jean wasn't just wife number one, but she was ballsy, strong, independent, and she considered herself an equal part of Paul Raymond's business. That's why Anna was thought to be the perfect fit for such a character because she is admittedly ballsy, as well as independent and strong.

Yeah, was Raymond's wife really enough of a public figure for anyone to even KNOW if Friel fumbled her performance of her. I reckon I'm probably the only American who has ever heard of Fiona Richmond (Tamsin Egerton has the same stunning body, but is a far, far better actress). I doubt even in the UK anyone knows a whole lot about Jean Raymond.
