Proof that it is writers and directors, not actors that makes a good movie/show

Idris Elba was terrific as Stringer Bell in "The Wire" but virtually everything else I have seen him in has been terrible.

Pretty much. I say writing is the most important. Followed by direction and acting. Even the most mundane premise can become a decent piece or art and/or entertaining with good writing.

I thought Elba was excellent playing Stinger Bell and made an effort to check out movies that he was in ... and they have all been terrible, including the braindead detective series he starred in in Britain. Bad in Prometheus, bad in 28 Weeks Later ... everything.

So you thought "Luther" wasn't any good either? That sucks to hear. I had heard good things about it before. I was excited to watch it one day.

The distinguishing thing about Luther is a cop with an out of control temper. I watched an episode or two and just quit. I think I ever paid to watch it ... it sucked. ( in my opinion of course )

Elba was good in Luther but the show itself is unrelentingly run of the mill. I'm baffled how it's often rated so highly because all I saw was a typical BBC drama. It was cliched and predictable with absolutely nothing original at all. And Ruth Wilson acts like a panto villain. She's hammy as hell. And I did give the show a fair chance. I watched a season and a half hoping it would get better. It didn't.
