The biggest irony is that besides Lexa Doig being married to Michael Shanks ("Dr Daniel Jackson"), it's the fact that MS first met Lexa on Andromeda as a guest character ("Star-Crossed"). The actors hit it off, and after filimg their 2nd episode together ("Day of Judgement, Day of Wrath"), the two were then married in August of 2003 and not too long ago, Lexa gave birth to MS and LD's first baby together.
And I have to disagree. According to both the cast and the producers, there is enough "original" material to last out another 3-4 seasons. Plus if you look at Dr Who, it went on for 26 years with over 15 differet "Dr Whos."
My best educated guess is that with RDA's limited schedule and Amanda Tapping about to give birth to her first, TPTB were looking for a new direction that they could take the show that normally they couldnt or perhaps were unable to with the cast at the time. But with the addition of Beau Bridges, Louise Gossett, Jr, Ben Browder, and Mitch Pileggi, it looks like the TPTB are looking to renew the spark in SG-1 with new faces and new villains, ideas, etc. I am personally excited to see how S9 will play out, and potentially S10+
