Eye colour contacts in Deadwood?

I noticed that in Deadwood, playing Francis Wolcott, he had dark brown eyes yet in photos elsewhere he appears to have blue eyes. Has anyone else noticed this? Why would the producers of the show want this?

It's interesting. Just compare a photo of him as Wolcott and a normal publicity shot, there's a marked difference. I think it was done to add to a more sinister appearance.

Or probably just to further differentiate him from his Jack McCall character.
