Incredibly versatile and underrated

I've now seen Garret Dillahunt in at least 10 roles, none of which resemble each other in the least, and he's always excellent. With the right role, he could be a household name, but I'll always admire his amazing versatility even if he remains simply a hard-working character actor.

You're quite right. "Underrated" was the wrong word to use since I've never heard anyone who's actually familiar with Mr. Dillahunt say that he's less than great. Like many other truly outstanding character actors, his name is simply not as well known as it should be, in my opinion.

I reckon that you only have to watch him in Terminator: The Sarah Connor Chronicles to see just how versatile he is. He was brilliant.

Yes he's carved out a nice little career playing menacing evil type characters. Ive been really impressed by him. I'm currently watching Deadwood and he's real good in that but Ive been impressed with him in most of his tv roles and smaller roles in movies. I'm looking forward to The Road and yeah his line from the trailer is great!

I agree, he's really good.

His voice inflection and expression was just dead in Chronicles, and yet not too campy dead. And then I saw him in The Last House on the Left as a really bad villain, that was great too. Now I'm watching him in Lie to Me again, and he was sort of that bit-flaky, nice-guy-pushed-over-the-edge-and-now-crazy type. It was perfect. He got the outbursts just right. Brilliant.

No doubt he's not big-time only because he doesn't look extraordinary (rather ordinary).

The sign of a good actor is that you out loud say "WOW, he was THAT guy in the show I enjoyed watching?"

An example is Jesse L. Martin who played the alien baseball player in the 6th season X-Files episode "The Unnatural", I saw that ep well after watching tons of Law & Order over the years -- and only when I checked IMDB for the "alien" actor did I realize he was the same guy.

Ditto for Garret Dillahunt -- just finished watching The 4400 for a second time, and neither time did I recognize "Cromartie" in Matthew Ross, both very strong characters, and yet same actor but I didn't realize it.

Well done, Garret.

I too agree. I first noticed him because of his unusual and unique face on Terminator: Sarah Connor. But once he was on my radar, I started seeing him guest starring everywhere; over a dozen shows and movies (including stuff from before I first noticed him). After the fourth or fifth time that I said “hey, it’s that guy again”, I realized two things: 1 he is versatile, and 2 he has a great agent.
