Why Hugh is so underrated?

One thing that frustrates me is the fact that Hugh is very underrated. I've never considered myself as his fan because his roles never interested me, and with bad, mediocre or boring movies (according to my tastes) I never looked at him, but since Will Graham I was impressed by his talent. Will is a very complex character, so Hugh's acting skills showing up more than ever. And after Will, I saw "Adam", then "Deadline Gallipolli" and other works of him...so, to me it's impossible to say he is trash.

Because all of this I was thinking about the awards and popularity he could have now if only Hollywood and people in general appreciate him more. Of course, part of the problem are his bad choices, but in the other hand I think Hollywood really need to look in his direction and offer him a really good role. Especially now because he's 41 (Hugh is not VERY old but the years pass quickly) and I saw that mostly of his coworkers are popular or are getting interesting opportunities. I mean, look at Eddie Redmayne, Anne Hathaway or Mads Mikkelsen (yes, Mads is not really popular but he will be in Marvel, Star Wars and a videogame i think) and Hugh...well, Hugh is there with The Path, which is a good tv show...but he really deserves something big.

So my questions are: why he's so underrated?, why he's not getting better opportunities?, He really has a chance of getting recognition?

(English is not my first language, so I hope all of you can understand me).

He does fly under the radar a bit, but I don't think he wants to be a Hollywood leading man the way I think you mean. This is what he says from one of his interviews:

“I don’t have any aspirations to be a leading man in the Hollywood sense. You have to be very specifically ambitious to be bankable in that way; to have a studio sign off on you, which is an entirely different thing from being good. You have to do the type of work to signal to people in Hollywood that you want to be 'that guy’ and I’ve realised I just don’t want to be 'that guy’."

I hope he'll keep getting roles like the one he had in Hannibal...somewhere he can really shine as an actor without it being blockbuster type stuff. I guess what I'm saying is, I'm not sure that he *hasn't* had the opportunity to do bigger stuff..he may not be taking those opportunities though, because those aren't the roles he is interested in.

Exactly, I'm pretty sure he said in other interview he has turned down some roles. It's not that he doesn't get offers from big studio movies is that he isn't interested, he doesn't audition for them or turns them down if he's offered. Nowadays big movies are commercial garbage with no substance, they make you a big name but it's all a bit flat and rarely they are good actors offering memorable performances, it's all fabricated.
I reckon that's why he doesn't want to, he certainly has what it takes to be a much bigger name and is more talented than many of the current A listers but he wants to stay true to himself and do smaller things that he likes better.
As a result he does fly under the radar but the people that know him know that he's really good. Especially after seeing Hannibal, I felt people had imagined him as this gorgeous guy but nothing too great of an actor and Hannibal proved them wrong, he's way more than a pretty face. You can see it in his earlier work on movies or tv series (if you skip the romantic comedies of course).

So go on. Kiss me. Kill me. Do something.

Oh I just remembered he will be in Fifty Shades Darker, well that is a step back and an odd choice for him as he avoids commercial stuff and this one is pretty commercial. I suppose something about the character was appealing for him that he accepted it, he's playing Dr. Flynn, Grey's psychiatrist. I don't think it's a big role either but I predict it will be the only good thing about that movie.

Because he doesn't want to do commercial stuff. He already said he doesn't aspire to be a Hollywood leading actor because it's too demanding you have to keep chosing high profile roles like that and he doesn't want that. He sticks to indies mostly or lesser know tv shows that have good rep but never too famous. He also does theater. Basically he wants a low key career he doesn't want to be the next Benedict Cumberbatch or Michael Fassbender.

I feel it's great he doesn't want to be a sellout but the cons is like you say his talent goes unnoticed, especially with his good looks people focus mostly on that over his acting that is always great no matter what he is doing, he has range and can pull of seriously complicated roles like Will Graham that a few of this A listers or more famous people (I'm looking at you Chris Pratt/Hemsworth) could never pull off.
He did however earn an Emmy nomination when he was in Elizabeth the miniseries. The fact that he wasn't nominated for Hannibal is embarrassing but then the Emmys hate horror shows.
He was excellent in The Big C also.
So go on. Kiss me. Kill me. Do something.

I felt the same way about Hugh before and after Hannibal. I did find it frustrating that he wasn't getting the kind of recognition I thought he deserved. And The Path is just not a good enough showcase for his talents.

I can only guess that this is what he wants for his career. He flirted with big budget movie roles for a while (King Arthur, Black Hawk Down) and has settled into the stability of TV series with the occasional film role.

I also think it's the way most New York based actors work. They stay away of the Hollywood spotlight for a reason. My big big hope is that there's a Hannibal revival on the horizon. Will Graham is his crowning achievement and he's never been better than he was opposite Mads.
