When did they start toning down his lip color?

Remember how RED his lips used to be? They even made jokes about it.

Who's "they"? A TV show? His manager? When did his lips look red, and when did they look toned down?

I don't remember any jokes, but he does have very red lips. I wonder if they're naturally that red or if he's made up to look that way?
