Lucky Girl/My Daughter's Secret Life
Having become President of the Elisha fan club after re-visiting The Girl Next Door recently, I started looking for other films of hers. Sadly, the majority that followed TGND (Wax, The Quiet, Captivity, Sassy Girl, etc) got pretty horrid reviews and have no interest to me, but I had seen good things about a Canadian made for TV film called Lucky Girl made before she became well known in America. I was shocked at how good it is. Elisha stars as a teenage girl that develops a gambling addiction. I've had my own history with gambling and have seen the ugly side of it and I felt like it was pretty spot on, without giving away too much of the plot.
I felt like Elisha Cuthbert really gave a pretty strong performance. Playing a High School Senior and gambling addict is no small feat and I really bought into it. You could see the acting chops developing. It also shows her incredible natural beauty, even at this point. She rarely wears makeup in the film, but I found her gorgeous, because she is such a natural beauty. I much prefer the way she looks in this film compared to anything else I've seen her in, outside of The Girl Next Door. Her eyes absolutely draw you in here. There are numerous good performances outside of Elisha as well, but beware that it does get pretty dark as it progresses. This is no Girl Next Door. But gambling and addiction are very dark subjects so I liked that.
