He is an actor. He was showing his acting abilities without hiding behind makeup and costume. I never saw the play, but he must have been really good. Heard his theaters were packed.

He played John Merrick in a stage production in 2015. Stage productions don't normally rely on elaborate makeup as much as movies do. For the movie Elephant Man, John Hurt spent nine hours a day having his prosthetics and makeup applied. It's ridiculous to expect a stage production to go through that.

It takes a much deeper actor to portray someone through their acting skills rather than relying on prosthetics to make the transformation.
