sweetie?

I've had quite a bit of travel in the USA, east of the Mississippi River, plus the central south, and have noticed a number of regional "dialects", and the term 'sweetie' is one of those regional terms of endearment.

In some regions it is quite common, but seldom heard in others.
I am a little surprised to see it in D.C./Maryland (in the show), since I have heard it more in the southern parts of the USA, and Texas. Maybe the 'Angela' character picked it up from her ZZ-Top father...

Take it for what it is in that context, and don't be offended, (unless you see the speaker sneering or smirking as they say it, and it is mostly said by women).




BTW, expressions get confused meanings in different countries too.
My brother and I encountered two waitresses along the Texas gulf coast that were from New Zealand, and "following the summer" around the world. One of them mentioned we might "ring them up". I only heard that used related to the checkout line in a store or a fast food restaurant, (cash register and paying), so I was confused and asked. She said it meant "call on the telephone" in New Zealand...
(Two countries seperated by a common language.)
