A guy in my speech class

I did a speech on him for a class and there was a black guy who was 31 who had never heard of him. Really caught me off guard. Now I feel like asking every young black person I see if they've heard of him.

reply

Nobody has any thoughts on this?

reply

I really don't think it's that surprising. If they don't listen to his music or type of music why would they
know who he was. I'm sure there are several great musicians that I've never heard of.
I'm also sure there are several white people who don't know who is too.

reply

Just saying you would think he would have at least heard the name at some point.

reply

Some neo-Nazi's know who he is. http://www.independent.co.uk/arts-entertainment/music/news/johnny-cash-family-t-shirt-nazi-facebook-charlottesville-virginia-rally-donald-trump-a7898141.html

The guy was denounced by Johnny Cash's family for wearing a J.C. T-shirt during the protests. I would've never have spotted that if they didn't do a freeze-frame of his shirt.

reply

I can't believe you would say something like that, I think he's at that level where if someone's never heard of HIM then you can never assume somebody's heard of anybody.

reply

If you go in assuming anything chances are you'll be either surprised or disappointed.

There are hundreds of musicians, artists, authors that I've never heard of.
What's "big" or important to me might not be to other people and vice versa.
Again it's not surprising at all.

For you to create this thread just goes to prove my point.

I have a 25 year old co-worker who never heard of OJ Simpson - I had to explain the bronco chase and subsequent trial

reply

Tell me you filled his head with utter horse shit. I love fuckin with people who don't have a clue! By the time I was done, he would have killed princess Diana, after she found out he was in a relationship with Versace...might even have gotten JFK Jr. And Phil Hartman in the story...

LOL

First...agree with jones...

There seems to be some confusion between personal tastes in different artforms and a knowledge of significant moments and people relating to pop culture...sure, I hate Elvis music, but when I was five and he died...I knew something important had happened. I believe Jones is taken aback, not by the individuals lack of familiarity with the mans music...but his lack of knowledge of the man himself...as he was a driving force in American pop culture for like five decades. I will say that for reasons unnecessary to list...anything country music might not translate as profoundly to a minority community as it did to a white community. Also, the younger generation doesn't seem to care about events that occurred prior to their existence. When I was young, I would actively seek the books music television and films of previous generations just as a means of personal growth...I wanted to be well rounded and able to converse with those above my station in life...today's youth do not seem to care about the way their betters perceive them at all...even being proud of their ignorance towards topics. On the bright side...I tend to beat them like red headed step children on trivia night...so there is that😁

reply

I totally agree with you're saying.
I was the same way. It was a lot more difficult compared with today to seek out this information.
Now Everything is 10 seconds away.

I my only point was jones said he was caught off guard. I don't think it's much of a surprise.
For all the reasons you listed above.
I don't think its right or necessarily good to not gather as much knowledge as you can but I
understand it and am never surprised by it now a days.
We unfortunately have a whole world full of people who enjoy living in their bubble.

reply

Gotcha! And now I'm flipping my opinion because you're right. I was confusing surprise and disappointment...totally not surprising...definitely disappointing...damn good post godewey! Especially your observation on the today's availability of information...remember going to the library if you needed to research something?LOL

reply

The only time I'm not right is when I'm wrong. You'll learn this. :)

We were together on this, you just stated it much better than I did.

Loved the microfiche machine. The newspapers entwined in that long bamboo stick thing.
It must have taken people hours to thread those without ripping the paper and they did it
everyday. Do they still use those ?

reply

Exactly...who knows? Last time I went to the library was two years ago, and that was just to get a new card so I could use overdrive to check out digital media...before that...20 years? We all have libraries in our pockets now...and somehow not a thought in our heads...
