In Modern Family - Acts like...

Michael Scott from The Office. The last episode I saw where he was talking about sales, it was almost perfect. I just think his mannerisms and the way he tries to do whats best but comes across totally goofy reminds me of the Michael Scott character.

Does anyone agree?

I think there is a difference between them. Michael Scott always comes across as someone incredibly selfish who tries to pretend he is a good guy. While Ty's MF character seems more like a genuinely good intentioned guy who tries too hard and ends up looking like a douche.

Agreed, but he totally reminds me of Michael Scott as well. Matter of fact, the whole show is like a repackaged "The Office" with a family theme. With that being said, the show IS starting to grow on me a lil!

I'd say your statement about a repackaged "The Office" is due to the fact that both are filmed in "mockumentary" style without a laugh track. For that matter, so is "Parks and Recreation" (which is from the same folks who brought us "The Office"). It gives the characters a chance to break the fourth wall in a more natural way, since we come to expect that they know they're being filmed.

The mockumentary style itself goes back at least as early as "This is Spinal Tap", although it's only in the past ten years or so that it has been applied to sitcoms. In a sitcom, it's also a shorthand form of character development, since they can just come out and tell you their motivations.

I haven't even watched this show before, saw an ad for it on telly last night and as a huge Office fan, I immediately thought it was using the style of the Office, just the way this guy was talking, and the fact they're talking to the camera (doco style, like the Office).

I do like the look of this show though, it's probably been going in the states for a while, it's just about to start here in Aus :)

I see what you! But I do see a lot of differences. I see Phil as more grown up and real as opposed to Michael. They are both very naive but I have a hard time seeing Michael have a wife and 3 kids. Michael seems more oblivious to me while Phil seems a little more aware, but naive. I also think Phil has better intentions and is a little more grown up. Michael tens to be selfish and unaware and his more "real" moments are few and far between. I do love them both though!
