no real star qualities

I never heard of this guy before as he's unknown to US audiences I think. So I was quite surprised to find an actual IMDB page about him, I mean one that seems to have some followers. Now when I read this board here I was even more stunned to read things like he's a European star and comparisons to international actors and all.

Anyway, I saw him in Bourne Ultimatum and found it pretty striking to watch a mediocre face and screen presence completely pale next to someone like Damon. I'm very interested in such things like charisma and faces that work for the camera and some that don't.

So I actually watched the scene a couple times to find out what it is that makes this difference. The camera set ups for the conversation scene were pretty even with Matt Damon not getting more close ups, nicer light or something. So while Bruhl seems to be a good actor - it was a very short but emotionally important scene and his choices were ok - his entire presence just doesn't radiates those striking leading man qualities. I really don't know what really makes the difference, maybe this is what they call movie magic. Matt Damon isn't an extraordinarily good looking guy either (though hands down much better looking than the thin lipped bit pale Bruhl) but the camera just loves Damon, it's really amazing. Anyone notices stuff like that too?

The fact that he isn't an international star is one of the main reasons people follow his career. He is one of Germany's biggest star and that's an achievement in its self, I don't see why he would want to gain international fame since he is so well loved in his own country and Spain.

It's all down to personal taste. Some people like that beefy Captain America thing and others don't. I prefer looking at actors and actresses that look more realistic. The more real they look, the more you can believe they are the character that they are. People in real life don't look like supermodels with giant abs.

I agree.

Daniel is an amazing actor. Bottom line. He makes great choices when it comes to film roles, whether or not they are big box office successes or not. He's fresh and has actual talent, not your typical mediocre Hollywood actor anyway.

So what if people find him attractive or not? I mean, it is entirely down to personal taste but It shouldn't be about that. He's real and exciting. Just because someone doesn't think he's particularly attractive, doesn't mean they have no star qualities..that's just ridiculous! I know everyone that has watched the likes of "Goodbye Lenin", "Ein Freuind Von Mir", "The Edukators", "Love in Thoughts....etc, will tell you that he's a rare kind of actor. I'm over hollywood stereotypes. Give an amazing, unknown, average-looking actor any day over god awful Ben affleck, Keanu Reeves and co.

Hey thanks for the recommendations!

Goodbye Lenin is great!

reply

Do you have other films to recommend?

I've seen GBL when I first heard that Tarantino hired him for Inglorious Bastards based on that film.

I've also seen both Bathory and Ladies in Lavander which I both liked as well!

reply

What kind of film are you in the mood for?

I haven't seen all of them yet, but there were a couple that stood out so far. The White Sound, John Rabe, No Regrets....I'll have another look through his filmography and see what escaped the top of my head. 😊

reply

Hey thanks!

I liked the following (to give you an idea of my taste):

-Rush
-Inglorious Bastards
-Goodbye Lennin
-Ladies in Lavender
-Captain America Civil War
-The Countess
-The Alienist (up to ep9)
-Deeply (I actually saw this back in 2000 and didn't realize he came out in it)
-Love in Thoughts (LOVE THIS!!!)
-Joyeux Noel
-A Friend of Mine
-Lila, Lila
-Eva (I saw this last year actually but will rewatch it again)
-Krabat (it's ok.... but not my favorite)
-The Cloverfield Paradox (forgot to mention I saw this recently which spurred me to go on this Bruhl marathon!)
-Lessons of a Dream
-The White Sound (a very intense and incredible performance by Bruhl)

So I like a variety of films but the super heavy political stuff is not something I'm in the mood for, although I have Alone in Berlin and The Alienist on my list as well, as the recommended films above.

I think Goodbye Lenin! is the best of what I've seen so far.

I remember liking 2 Days in Paris quite a lot. Experienced a couple of moments reaching for a pillow to scream in. :D

reply

Lol, I guess it's a frustrating film then?

reply

Oh I'd recommend fo sure! The pillow screaming moments are more for the cringe effect certain scenes had on me. In a good way, though. 😅

reply

Idk but I'll give it a shot. Thanks for the recommendation!

I've seen Alone in Berlin which I didn't like so much and have seen episodes 1-4 of The Alienist and tbh have problems with it as well but will finish the show.

Just an update, I've now seen the following:

-The Alienist (up to ep9)
-Deeply (I actually saw this back in 2000 and didn't realize he came out in it)
-Love in Thoughts (LOVE THIS!!!)
-Joyeux Noel
-A Friend of Mine
-Lila, Lila
-Eva (I saw this last year actually but will rewatch it again)
-Krabat
-Alone in Berlin
-The Cloverfield Paradox (forgot to mention I saw this recently which spurred me to go on this Bruhl marathon!)
-Lessons of a Dream
-The White Sound (a very intense and incredible performance by Bruhl)

His German films seem easy to find but finding his Spanish films is almost impossible!

reply

I'm watching The Alienist at the moment. 😊

reply

What episode are you in?

reply

Starting episode 7 now.

Just watched:

-The Face of an Angel
-Cargo
-Salvador
-Vayo Con Dias
-The Zookeeper's Wife

I liked him in everything but enjoyed Cargo, Vayo Con Dias, and Burnt as a whole film, especially both cargo and Vayo Con Dias.

you know, there IS a world outside of the US...

reply

And I don't think he's an actor to be a "star", there's a difference between being an actor and a star.

reply

A star is an actor who has become famous. Period. That is the only difference. Whether or not the actor or star is GOOD is a matter of subjective opinion. This idiotic notion that one is EITHER and actor OR a star is absurd and immature.

reply

charlottewood and scarlett roses only in American can someone make comments like he doesn't have star appeal. There are to many good looking actors and actresses that are just ok. Yet people will rush out to see their movies because of their looks only.
