The qualifier makes no sense. A lot of gay people are Catholics. Hell, half of the priests in the United States are gay (they did surveys of American Catholic seminarians in the 70's & 80's and the number was a little more than half). It was the easiest & most plausible closet for a Catholic boy who had no interest in women. I suspect that's changing as the closet becomes less & less necessary.
