Who was he in Cold Mountain?

He played the youngster "Oakley" from Cold Mountain who apparently lied about his age and joined up with Inman and others when the war started.

I had to look twice myself to recognize him. I seem to recall his hair color in the movie was considerably lighter than usual. His character died relatively early in the film of wounds suffered in the crater seige at Petersburg. He passed away as Inman sat at his bedside, holding his hand offering assurances of the future as Stobrod Thewes played the fiddle.

He was the young boy from Cold Mountain who went down into the "drop-off" where all of the soldiers from the north had been lured, and were trapped. He was pulled out by Jude Law, and was later shown dying on a cot. He requested a song from Renee Zellwiger's "dad," and he stated to Jude Law's character - "looks like I'm going to make it back to Cold Mountain before you" (or, something like that).
