Comidic role?...ok, accents...
I think he'd be great in a comedy vis a vis the Cohen Bros. He tickled me in "All the Pretty Horses", (the lightening scenes). Which he did a great job in all way round...it may be my favorite western.
As far as Southern accents, which have been a point of contention on this board.
Southern "accents" are legion. From Virgina to Texas..indiana, Maryland, even Michigan, due to the immigration during the post-war years. As a Southerner I can decern the speakers home. Its a shame that "accent" is regarded as a negative. Almost all great American music, literature, and definative food came from the South. As Thomas Wolfe said...
