I think he is really BAD. All he can do is southern and he makes us southern people LOOK REALLY BAD. He stresses his accent way too much and can't even do a good job at that.
I just don't like his acting and think he is way overrated.

I don't know much about whether he is over emphasising his accent or not. But ever since American Gothic he's talked like that.
I think he's a decent actor, but he hasn't had enough roles for me to really judge him on.
I quite like the fact he's got a southern accent though, it makes a refreshing change to all the other actors who largely come from LA.

Um... he's from Alabama. I'm from Mississippi, so I consider myself southern as well and I see nothing wrong with his accent. I actually know people from the area he was born and raised in, and yes, they talk like that as well.
If you read up on Lucas, you'll know he turns down a lot of roles where they want him to change his accent. Which I think limits his range of acting, but I'm sure he has his reasons.

How in the world could he possibly make southern people look really bad? The only people that do that, and quite well,is the people who live in the south that are really bad. He talks a little slow, but the southern accent varies from area to area. And quite frankly you are buying into the stereotype that all us southerners talk and act the same over a great area consisting of many states.
I wonder if yanks think people in North Dakota or Minnesota make them look bad?

Seriously though. I, too, am from Mississippi and I think his accent is just his normal speaking accent. I do not think he pushes it. I like it because he sounds like any number of guys I might talk to on any given day here at home.
