Robert Armstrong was better in the same role, but I liked Jack Black as Carl Denham and think Peter Jackson's King Kong is generally very good. Casting was important here despite the spectacle of Kong and Skull Island, and Black, whom I had huge reservations about when the film was originally cast, is great here. He brings the right touch in almost every scene, acting with a knowing humour and sincerity but never going over-the-top despite how over-the-top the premise of this film actually is. And although it's been said innumerable times, shades of Orson Welles are abound in Black's Carl Denham, and I like that.
