Actually he wasn't nommed because the republicans thought he could beat Hillary, the was nommed in large part through the work of the liberal democrats in the media that thought he was the worst candidate and would be the easiest one for Hillary to beat. The irony is that Hillary was probably the only candidate that Trump could have beaten in that election about any other democrat on the ticket would have likely beaten Trump because non of the other dems were as hated as Hillary by people within her own party, or by as many independents.

I think he felt he knew the women well enough to give them some sort of hug or show of affection. Whoever these ladies are, I think some people are looking for some recognition. Perhaps Gloria Allred is behind all this, haha.
