Aptow at his best doing TV series
Small screen and episodic--that's where this guy shines. I can take or leave his films.
But the TV shows: F & G, then Undeclared, now The Girls: this is GOOD tv. His tv series are not about manic comedy, guffows and over the top sitatuions that we see in his films. They are quieter and more realistic, and they point out the ironies of life.
Think about how he's moving along in the developmental periods of the average suburban American:
Freeks and Geeks chronicles High School
Undeclared centers on early college years
The Girls focus is early to mid 20's
It's just interesting to me. I wonder if the next Aptow tv series will be an alternate look at 30-somethings.
