Most Overrated filmmaker in Hollywood.

Apatow is by far the most overrated filmmaker in all of Hollywood. His movies are overlong, humor is always uneven and his writing is just awful. He's nothing but a point and shoot director, plain and simple. No visual look to any of his films whatsoever. Yet he's given all these Honorary Awards that directors like Richard Linklater, Wes Anderson, Alexander Payne, Kevin Smith and Jim Jarmusch deserve far more because they are light years more talented than him. Someone please explain to me why everyone in Hollywood loves sucking his balls.

While it's debatable if he's the single most overrated filmmaker in Hollywood, in my opinion he's definitely in the running. The way I see it he hasn't made a funny movie in nearly 10 years. On top of that his movies have gotten really repetitive and the way he parades his wife and kids in all his films is shameful. Nepotism at its very worst.

That's funny. I remember him admitting that on the commentary for Undeclared. He said he was always nervous when another director was on set because all he knows how to do is point and shoot.

The guy's success is from the talented people he gets together when making films. Not really his direction.

who ever rated him highly? he is a known HACK.

reply

Maybe he's overrated, but his films make money. It's called show BUSINESS, not show art.

As for his wife and daughters being in his films, have you considered that they can spend more time together that way? If there's a part for them, why not? Leslie acts in other films too.

reply

Disagree. When you look at the production budget + marketing of the last few films he's directed he's lost $.

reply

Well, he's only directed 4 films, but he's produced many more. In any case, as long as his hits make a lot of money (Knocked Up, 40 Year Old Virgin, the Anchorman movies) the occasional miss isn't considered that big a deal. His films are relatively low budget (> $50 million) by Hollywood standards because they aren't action flicks with lots of special effects. My guess is that most do well in DVD sales because they're comedies.
