Biggest drop in popularity

Is there a filmmaker besides JJ Abrams who went from being regarded as one of the best in the industry to being one of the most loathed, especially so quickly? I mean he used to seem pretty good when he made Alias and Lost and some of his pre-Star Wars filmography, and then he suddenly became a studio hack with Rise of Skywalker and his previous filmography became tarnished as well when taking off the “modern Spielberg” glasses. He used to be one of my favorite filmmakers but now I don’t look forward to any of his movies.

Joss Whedon sadly dropped in popularity more than him

reply

Yeah, I always found Whedon overrated to begin with.

It’s funny he’d be regarded as one of the best in the industry when all he really does is just bank off of other peoples creative genius.

First noticed him with Lost like most people I guess(?). Obviously doesn't know how to write an ending. See the atrocity that was Rise of Skywalker

Tim Burton

reply

Definitely him too! He hasn’t made an amazing movie since Ed Wood and not a good movie in general since Sweeney Todd.

I don't believe he was ever regarded as one of the best in the industry or close to it at least on the big screen. He's never even been nominated for an academy award by his peers. He is a competent filmmaker, but with the exception of Super 8, all of his films are based off of well established franchises. He's the sequel/reboot/rehash man and I don't think he has dropped in popularity as he has snagged another franchise with the DCEU Superman reboot. He is definitely a better producer than filmmaker and his track record shows that.

reply

Yes i think he prefers being a producer

He was always a "mystery box" hack, people just needed time to see it.
