why do they always downplay her race in her roles

I noticed whenever she plays a role in a mainstream movie/tv shows and now a black film (think like a man) she always playsthe free spirited one that dates white guys or other races besides black men yet is professional. Neo Ned shes with Jeremy Renner, think like a man with Jerry Ferrara and FlashForward with John Cho. Is this intentional? Are you supposed to accept here as just a universal beautiful woman ?

That's a really good question. The fact that she's black is usually downplayed so much, that you wonder if any actress (black, white or anything else) could have played it...which in my opinion is a really great thing.

She is the UNIVERSAL chick. She can be anybody, and date anybody and strangely, it matches. I totally buy her in those roles, despite her disarming beauty.

I actually think it is a good thing it means Gabrielle is not being segregated and she has more freedom in her film roles.I love it that Gabrielle gets to work with really good actors like Jeremy Renner, John Cho, and Jerry Ferara I think it is progress in Hollywood. Why should a black actress only work with black men? It makes no sense. Let Gabrielle have the freedom to work with any actor regardless of his racial background.

She's the female Morgan Freeman

What does that mean?

Means that Morgan Freeman doesn't play just black any more. He sometimes plays white guys on film - Unforgiven, Gone Baby Gone, Shawshank Redemption. His characters weren't black guys in those movies.

OK. But I still don't see what that has to do with the kind of roles Gabrielle Union plays.

Black women date white men in real life. My ex was white so is my current boyfriend. How is that downplaying being black? Black women are versatile!

Yeah, some of the people on this thread don't know what they're talking about.
