There are several references to her being taller than Sarah Michelle Gellar during the later seasons. She must have hit puberty and passed Sarah in height during that time. Right?
shareMIchelle may have already been taller when she joined the cast. They had her wearing mostly flip flops or sneakers while SMG kept wearing high heels in the same scenes for her first season or so.
shareYeah the footwear difference makes it hard to tell, but during the episode at the funeral in Season 5 it looks possible Michelle was already taller than SMG. Michelle was noticeably taller in season 7 than she was in season 5.
shareSMG was rather short, which was good for the whole effect of the small blonde entering the dark back alley and kicking ass against the vampire who thought she was an easy victim.

I actually think when Michelle was originally cast to be Sarah's sister (pre-season 5) it was assumed she wasn't going to grow clearly taller than Sarah, after all, Michelle's mom and sister are quite short, the same height as SMG or maybe even a little shorter. So Michelle ending up four inches taller than Sarah was a big surprise and I imagine Sarah was teased endlessly about it on set. I think that is why they referenced it a few times on the show.

Michelle does look shorter in that shot. In season seven though Michelle is slightly taller than SMG. So during the two seasons she did gain a little height either from a growth spurt or from the fact that SMG no longer wore heels.
