Stanwyck and Swank

Barbara Stanwyck was a very odd looking woman: little eyes, heavy cheeks, large nose. Nevertheless her features worked together so well that she is without a doubt one of the most attractive actresses of the 30s and 40s.
Hilary Swank is also very odd looking: narrow slanted eyes, skinny face, lantern jaw; however, like Stanwyck, her features work so well together that she comes across as being most attractive.

Because Stanwyck was still pretty, Swank is not.
That must be one of the easiest puzzles to ever figure out. So,anybody with so-called "odd" features is attractive?

reply

Believe it or not, someone once wrote that Barbra Streisand resembled Audrey Hepburn. I almost fainted from shock! BS is grotesque: crossed eyes, a collie's nose, and the teeth and jaws of a carcharodon carcharias; AH, with her huge doe eyes, small nose, high cheekbones and long neck, is the personification of GRACE.
Odd features are not always attractive; it depends on how well they work with each other. The features of BS are at war with each other; those of AH worked together in perfect peace and harmony.

True, but I never thought AH had odd features.

Nothing personal, but people today scrutinize others to death, If there is one feature that they don't see every day, they will make a thread of it. Notice every balding actors' board has a balding thread. Then there is the thread about an actor's forehead being "too big",or their arms too short/long, or their height...
Depressing.

That has been the case for a long time.
At the time of CHARLIE'S ANGELS, everybody praised Cheryl Ladd and Jaclyn Smith for their perfect even features, but Farrah was criticized for having a jaw that reminded people of Burt Lancaster. Quite the irony when you consider that Farrah's is the name most associated with that show.

Farrah's jaw seemed fine to me, it was just strong compared to her upper-portion of face. And yes, Farrah's angular--yet imperfect--features did make her a standout. It was also the way she carried herself, the way she moved. It's hard to define. I thought Smith was a bland beauty--soemthing nobody ever gets when I say it,and Ladd fit in the middle somewhere

At this moment I am watching on TCM GYPSY, starring Natalie Wood and, as her mother, Rosalind Russell. The young RR did not look anything like NW, yet both were, in their own individual ways, prime examples of the dark sultry beauty--definitely not bland at all.

are you referring to Jaclyn Smith?
Yes, Smith was a sultry beauty, but still a bland sultry beauty; if 1000 other women in Hollywood looked equal to her, than it's "bland"
