Why did Stabler retire?

I missed a bunch of episodes, and never found out why Stabler retire. I know Chris Meloni was ready to move on, but I don't know how they wrote him off, beyond his retirement.

And I sure would love to see him in a regular show again.

From IMDb's FAQ.
Within the show this was explained as Stabler resigning from the NYPD off-screen because of the trauma of having to kill a young girl during a shootout at the SVU squad-room.

It was ridiculously out of character for Stabler to not be in contact with his coworkers.

Chris has worked steadily in the past 5 years. He is doing film work now but the Wet Hot series is on Netflix and his new series Underground will be shown at the start of next year.

I totally understand actors wanting to move on to other things, but I sure do miss him on SVU.

I do too. I love him as an actor, and I loved Stabler.

What episode was his last?

Stabler's last episode was Smoked (Season 12 Ep 24). As stated at the end of the episode Eliot is forced to shoot a young girl when she pulls a gun out and shoots someone in the middle of the squadroom. She dies in his arms. By the time filming resumed it was announced that Chris would not be returning. Cragen informed Olivia that Stabler was retiring and they showed her go into a private room and break down. I get why they have to do things when an actor isn't returning but there is NO WAY Eliot would make that decision and not have told Liv in person or stopped having contact with her!!!!

so out of character for him to do that too. Maybe take a week or so off of work but not just up & leave like that. Wish he had a better send off....which is why probably so many of us feel like he should come back & do something because we feel like we were left hanging in a way :/

He will return for the final episode for the series in may 2017 as a long triangle issue for Benson.
