He plays a Liberal but is actually a Libertarian whose Conservative

He likes Rosanne, Ann Coulter, reads right-wing news, hates Trump, prefers a leftist leader because they're more 'free' on that end along with a druggie. He's more or less an oxymoron.

He's truly a mixed bag, politically speaking.

He is, more or less, what you'd call Libertarian. He does tend to lean more to the left side of libertarian, more than right.

You could I guess even call him a quasi-centrist libertarian.

reply

Maher and "conservative" really don't belong in the same sentence.

reply

Yeah, he's not easily placed into a box; it's what makes him worth listening to, in my opinion, because he's not just regurgitating what peer pressure, cultural fiat, or the dictates of some political party tell him to barf up.

Whereas people on the left start with a set of misplaced values and deny or ignore reality when it contradicts those values, Maher, is different in in one big respect. He still starts out by subscribing to those misplaced values, but he also admits that reality shows otherwise.

This is why Maher will always defend lefty ideas and go to bat for lefty politicians, but inevitably reality will just be too great to ignore. I give him some credit for recognizing reality at least in some circumstances.
