Fun fact about this song - it was a love-letter to the film E.T. which moved Neil when he first saw it. If you listen to the lyrics there are direct references to the film.
Also - I saw Neil Diamond live in maybe '82. My first concert ever.
The funny thing is I just found out about this ET connection in the past couple of days! I used to love this song but it it was one of those I'd totally forgotten about until I was watching some South Park clip and there was Cartman singing it!
Anyway, I looked it up on YouTube and saw all these ET related clips. Apparently he had to pay some settlement which I don't really understand since it's not like he'd lifted any music or anything...
I never was a huge fan of the song heartlight. It was OK. My favorite Neil Diamond song has always been Love on the Rocks.
shareFair enough. I'll need to listen to more of his, never been a big fan - think I only came across that song in the first place via some Burt Bacharach collection...
Anyway meant to say, that's great you saw him then at his peak. There's another live video of Heartlight on youtube in '86 and weirdly you can literally see his powers have faded slightly before your eyes. So '82 must have been awesome!
The thing I remember most is he appeared inside of a diamond made of lasers. In the Star Wars era that was mind blowing. Then he started blasting lasers all over the arena. I believe it was at the Checkerdome (now known as St Louis Arena) in St. Louis, MO.
