IMHO, the movie's CGI was the big "scene-stealer" during the entire movie.
I have seen cast interviews that talked about the difficulty in doing CGI-heavy movies, including this one, and I feel for the actors. In many scenes, there is absolutely no set, just the green-screen backing. IMHO again, it requires a special talent to act out scenes when there is no scenery, props, or sometimes no other actors!
During the STAR WARS filming, a crew member held up a "marker" on a stick at the height of JarJar Binks' head so the live actors had a focus point!
Do not believe it is tough to act in those conditions?
Just try a simple test... Set up about a three minute script, turn on your video recording, and act your script. I suggest you will be very surprised at the result. (There will probably be at least several instances of loss-of-concentration, and focus on the scene. IMO, a one minute video would not show those.)
Kate Beckinsale most likely has had a lot more practice with CGI "sets" than Jessica, (UNDERWORLD movies), but even she got somewhat lost in the CGI as well.
Just my opinion... Jessica and Kate were high points.
And another gripe... Why did the movie put in the 'nods' to the original movie? It wasn't even set on Mars, and it certainly had none of the "campy" charm of the original, clearly by design!
