his career never worked out
was suppose to be a big star.
shareI was never really that impressed with his acting. Also, he was kind of awkward looking.
sharethe gay rumors didn't help either.
shareThe fact that he looked flaming gay even less.

I don't know what you all are smoking. Although Johnson didn't make the habit of appearing in great films,
he was a HUGE MGM star from the mid-'40's to the mid-'50's.
His homosexuality had nothing to do with it. I certainly never knew he was gay until the late '90's, and he
never came across gay either.
He was great in "Command Decision" and showed is comedic skills well in "In the Good Old Summertime."
being gay (or the rumors thereof) back then could ruin a career. why do you think Rock Hudson married a woman ??
shareWell, being publically outed could ruin a career, but actors like Johnson had people for that.
No,Johnson was a huge star in his day, he was one of the most popular actors of the 1940s. But he isn't well-remembered or appreciated today, because he didn't make many films that stood the test of time.
Rock Hudson's homosexuality wasn't a huge secret, but neither was it broadcast outside the entertainment community.
When I was a kid back in the 60s, my mother told me he was gay (in the vernacular of the day) and I didn't believe her. It wasn't until he appeared in Dynasty, looking deathly thin from undisclosed AIDs, that I realized she was right.
His arranged marriage to his best friend's wife created a whole mess. I think the studios might've wanted to stay away from him.
shareI didn't know VJ was gay until just now. I liked his body (of work) just fine (haha).
How many slots are open for the Gregory Pecks, the Jimmy Stewarts, the Gary Coopers, the Cary Grants ?
Van Johnson did great in a variety of roles, and he could sing on top of it. I don't think any of the a-fore mentioned would croon on screen other than in a comic fashion. Van is the Man.
He had a solid career. Several of his pictures were major studio hits. I would watch him anytime.
