How would you evaluate his horror filmography?

Re-Animator is a lot of fun. Short runtime, great gore, some nudity from the lovely Barbara Crampton, quite funny too.

From Beyond is maybe my favorite of his. The same formula as in Re-Animtor (with much of the same cast). Short and sweet, gory, funny, some sex appeal.

Dolls is just okay. Didn't care for it much.

The Pit and the Pendulum is decent. It had some potential but never really rises above being just okay.

Castle Freak is alright for a direct-to-video horror movie.

Dagon comes close to being great. I really like it. A good adaptation of The Shadow over Innsmouth. Sadly the low budget shows and it doesn't quite make it in the end.

A 2.5 hit wonder. That Lovecraft duo with Jeffrey Combs & Barbara Crampton were his hits, two great movies. Dagon could have been another had it been made in the late 80s featuring those two.

I guess one would question how great a director he was if his two sole hits featured the same casts. Was he a great director or was Combs funny, Crampton sexy and the gore satisfying? I'm not entirely convinced his movies would be able to deliver without those three components.

It seems he maybe stumbled upon a decent collective and fluked temporary greatness. A funny lead, a sexy side and some decent special FX work. Gore, tits, laughs. What more does a movie need?
