Magnificent as George V in THE KINGS SPEECH

He only has a couple of short scenes but his brilliant in both of them.

In the first you can clearly see why his son (Colin Firth) is terrified of him.

Yet in the second he is very moving.

THE KINGS SPEECH is an excellent movie - yet you come away wanting to learn alot more about the character of George V.

I thought Gambon was perfectly cast as George V. The physical resemblance is striking, and Gambon's voice perfectly conveys a cold, imperious, stiff older man. THE KINGS SPEECH is an excellent movie - yet you come away wanting to learn alot more about the character of George V.

I KNOW!!! Have there been other movies made about George V? I'm sure there have been.

The Lost Prince, a miniseries made about ten years back, features George V as a major character. Interestingly enough, Michael Gambon's in there playing HIS father. Just looked up the film here on IMDb. Almost equally interesting, George V is played by Tom Hollander, who played Edward VIII in another film, as well as George III in John Adams!

As a Yankee who doesn't know a lot about British monarchs but who has suddenly become interested in them after watching both The Queen and The King's Speech, I think The Lost Prince is the next film on the subject I will watch!

Thanks heaps, sankoff!

I agree. He was absolutely stunning. I was surprised to see it was Gambon who played George V. He did an excellent job. The complete cast of The Kings Speech is overwhelming. If there was a Oscar for best casting, TKS would win.

I was surprised to see it was Gambon who played George V. Why did it surprise you? Who were you expecting in the role?
