Refuses to read the Harry Potter books??
No wonder his Dumbledore is all wrong! Never once does he give off the charming, clever, "twinkley" vibe. He just seems like a typical grumpy old man. This explains it.

shareYep, and for those who want the link: http://www.imdb.com/news/ni0887445/
Makes perfect sense. I wish he'd read the books. He's nowhere as calm as book Dumbledore is. But hey, his choice. His acting did improve from the earlier movies where he took on the role.
His job is not to play the Dumbledore from the books. His job is to play the Dumbledore that the filmmakers want on screen, and that can be found in the script.
Ralph Fiennes and Alan Rickman don't read the books either.
J.K. Rowling has no issue with his portrayal of Dumbledore. You cannot, one on hand, call yourselves the defender of the books, then accuse Rowling of being a starstruck author who prostituted her books out.
Tfilm78, actually you're wrong. Rickman does read each book just before filming. He's said it in interviews. I don't know about Fiennes, but I'm not big fan of his.
And regarding playing the Dumbledore "that the filmmakers want on screen?" Sorry, but one of the directors (from three, I think) gave Gambon the leeway to play the part as GAMBON wanted (that was mentioned in one of the "First Look" things on cable/satellite just prior to the movie's release). So put the blame where it belongs! Gambon is just plain WRONG for the role.
Who said Rowling is a starstruck author who prostituted her books out? The answer, methinks, is NO ONE.
I've got a jar of diiiirt, I've got a jar of diiiirt. Guess what's inside it!"
Gambon makes a fantastic Dumbledore.
Ian McKellen would've been my personal choice. I really want to know why he wasn't the original choice, or if for some reason he wasn't considered.
Um, probably because he was in New Zealand working on LOTR when they started shooting Harry Potter.
As for why he wasn't cast after Richard Griffiths died, he probably was already working on something else.
