Carson was the best of all time, but Griffin was good, too.

I liked to watch Johnny Carson because when I was a kid it meant I got to stay up late with the big kids, but as far as an actual talk show and interesting conversation - Merv Griffin any day. He would let his guests talk, and ask them interesting questions ... the Johnny Carson show turned into a show that just advertised the latest celebrity movies, or books, with some corny comedy gags.

Merv didn't need a goofball sidekick like Ed McMahon either.

The topic is- Johnny Carson or Merv Griffin? Two contemporaries. Both were born in 1925.

Merv was very good. But Johnny was the best.

Johnny was The Man in the 60's, 70's, and 80's.

Period.

IMO - he beats everyone. In my lifetime anyway. One can't speak for talk show hosts in the 50s and 60s.
