He was on the surface a Wonderbread mild midwestern with a steel trap mind and a sense of humor unsurpassed by any other comic, before or since, and I love Groucho Marx, S.J. Perelman, W.C. Fields, Steve Martin, Gracie Allen, Chris Rock and Richard Prior before the crack fire. Carson made the hardest job in the world look easy.
