Better than John Williams?

Obviously the two are in the best of all time discussion, but I often find myself enjoying Zimmer's music much more. I think Williams has more iconic music in the film industry, but I often find myself enjoying Zimmer's style. I sometimes feel like Zimmer's music overtakes the film itself or makes it so much more that what is happening on screen more often than William's.

Definitely not. But he has created some amazing scores. I really, really love his score for The Thin Red Line. That is imho one of the best scores of the past 30 years.

My favorites; I enjoy their music equally.

Zimmer:
The Rock
The Dark Knight
The Lion King

Williams:
Jurassic Park
Indiana Jones and the Last Crusade
Home Alone 2: Lost in New York
Hook

I don't think he's anywhere close to John Williams. John Williams has memorable music. Who doesn't know the music to Star Wars, Jaws, Superman, Indiana Jones, Home Alone and Jurassic Park? I can't even think of one significant piece of music that Zimmer has done that has went down in history. Zimmer's music is completely generic and overcomposed.

John Williams is a lot like Ennio Morricone - he has created some extremely moving and memorable themes but he's very hit and miss. A lot of his scores don't really stand out, even if they go for a more bombastic effect. Zimmer has a different approach to music as it's almost always more subtle and there just to fit the visuals. Seldom do his scores draw attention to themselves. He has changed a lot with the times but never really had too much of a "signature" outside of his Trailer-style music of the past 15 years.
