never understood why he didn't make it big

he had all the right things. he was firing on all cylinders. he coulda and shoulda been a way more huge star in his day but it didn't happen. i never understood why.

and don't say racism, because i don't think that was it. perhaps in the early 70s maybe. but by the time the 80s came you had eddie murphy and others headlining huge budgets so the racism claim doesn't hold water. there must be some other reason.

it's just an enigma to me, why he didn't go bigger. because he was such a cool dude and had great screen presence. every single time he comes on TV he catches your attention, makes you wanna watch the movie.

and i always think the same thing when i see him; 'why didn't he make it big as an action star?'

action jackson realy seemed to hurt him, didnt headlinr anything after?

yeah that would be about right. i think it came out just before predator. i dunno for some reason he got overpassed by lots of projects. to me he coulda made great leading man action roles if they woulda let him. action jackson was kindof a joke i reckon, so i cant really see him being judged by that. he shoulda got a couple of more chances, IMO and i think he coulda changed a lot of minds

anywho, it didnt happen and i feel bad for carl. cool mofo that one, and real class act. every time you see him, always on point and gracious.

at least he got apollo creed. he's timeless in that one

How is he not big? After all he is a household name.

i don't think he is. i think some of us know him. most people under 40 probably only know him if you say 'that guy played apollo creed'

but also, being known is not making it big. to me he shoulda had large scale leading roles like eddie murphy had in bev hills cop or like will smith had in the 90s. leading man stuff

his acting sure could handle that, and he was hella good on stunts and action.

that is what i was saying

And why is it so important that anyone under 40 know who he is?

reply

it's not important. it has nothing to do with anything. which is why i would ask why YOU brought it up:
'After all he is a household name.'
that's completely apart from my point, if people 'know' him. i was talking about his career trajectory in feature film

I am old so I always think of him as Apollo Creed but one thing I love about him was his roles in Happy Gilmour and Arrested Development. He has a great comedic presence and would have been cool to see him get cast in more funnier roles or even get cast in a sitcom.
