Brilliant but underrated
Don't you agree?
shareAbsolutely! Her performances (especially in Breaking the Waves) are amongst the best I have seen given by an actress, yet when people talk about the greatest living actress they mention, Cate Blanchett, Kate Winslet, Meryl Streep and never Emily! I also think Julianne Moore is grossly underrated.
shareEmily Watson is utterly brilliant. Yes she has made a couple of dodgey films but the very best should! Fireflies was rubbish, but I sat through it because of her. The fault was basically the banal script and the overacting by Dafoe. Watson gets my vote anytime.
shareI agree, I think she's brilliant and terribly under-appreciated. All actors can hit snags in terms of casting choices, but she is often the light in even the bleakest of movies. Her performances are always dynamic and honest, and it's a shame she isn't more well known, especially here across the pond.

Yes, indeed she is. Brilliant actress in any kind of role she tackles, whether it be brief or in featured roles like those she did early in her career. She's truly talented and versatile, and capable of giving an excellent portrayal of a character that runs the gamut of emotions like the one she delivered as Bess McNeill in her film debut in Lars von Trier's drama Breaking the Waves. She was memorably amazing to me as the naive, passionate and emotionally unstable village girl in that movie. She truly deserved that nomination she got for best actress in her film debut, at the 1997 Academy. She's amazingly different in every one of these movie I've seen her in : Red Dragon, Equilibrium, Gosford Park, Metroland, Punch-Drunk Love, Miss Potter, The Water Horse, Fireflies in the Garden , several of which she's just in supporting roles, but significant ones, so I suppose it's true she's an underrated actress. Actually, I would have avoided a movie like Red Dragon - not my type of movie - but I did see it just because of her, and was glad I did.
I hope to see soon another one of her earlier films - Hilary and Jackie, a close friend have already received her dvd order from amazon (I'm still saving so I can have my own copy) and we'll watched it together this coming week-end.
