Do you think Jim could have done a serious drama?

Absolutely. I saw him in "The Beverly Hillbillies" movie, which I thought was going to be horrible, but it wasn't bad. He was very good as Jed, who is not a goofy character. I think he could have done anything he set his talent to.

Yeah, Varney was one of those actors who felt he was getting typecast. Playing the lead in a non-Ernest film was a big deal to him.

He seemed to die just as he was starting to get taken seriously as a versatile actor.

100% he could, i remember he played a pretty straight role on Roseanne in the later seasons. He was so talented. Dont know much about him in real life but he sure seems like a well cultured gentleman
