He should have won!

I watched the Emmys just in hopes that he'd win, but alas. He really did a phenomenal job as Miguel in Dexter. I didn't have much of an opinion of him one way or another before that, but after that season -- yeah, he was awesome. Definitely entertaining to watch and did a very good job with the role methinks, with all the ambiguity and different layers and all.

Oh well. Best part of the last season of Dexter for sure!! I can't stand the character of Dexter, actually, lol, but the show is still fun to watch. I was reluctant to watch it again after Doakes died (my favorite character) but Smits came in a saved the day and made me very eager to see what would happen next! I wasn't sure where it was going at first but he definitely nailed what he was doing.(And too bad he had to die, too! Damn that lil hypocrite Dexter!)

Anyway, bravo, even if he didn't win.

Yeah, he was really great in Dexter. Took me by surprise because when I first saw him on the show I was like "Why would they cast him on this show?" but he did the character so well. He really anchored the show because I initially thought that season's plot was going to be the weakest of the three seasons. Without Smits it would have been dragged down by the boring Internal Affairs, pregnant Rita, and Anton subplots.

Next season should be superb though, with John Lithgow as Dexter's nemesis...and the return of Lundy!

well... the storyline was good but let's be honest he played the character like he plays everything else... he was alternatively charming or pissed off. This guy's acting has the subtletly of a high school play!

I actually just came to this site to see if anyone had commented about Smits in Dexter. I agree with the OP...Smits should have won the Golden Globe. He was absolutely brilliant as Miguel Prado. I actually am going to miss the character. So far, I think Season 3 remains my favorite.

I was not that familiar with him either, having never watched West Wing or L.A.
Law, and I was amazed how fantastic he was as Miguel Prada.
I loved that character and the entire story line.

He's my favorite villain of this series.

I just got to watch this season of 'Dexter' a few weeks ago. I had first seen Jimmy Smits in 'Running Scared' (I LOVE that movie, I think it's very under-rated), so I've known for years he was a very good actor. When I saw his performance in 'Dexter', I don't think "very good" cuts it any more. WOW. Seriously, wow. The acting in this show continues to stun me. I've never heard of most of them before, but they're REALLY good. And then they throw in someone that I recognise and already know is good, and he proves that he's even better than I already thought.

I watch very little television or movies. You could could the number of shows I've watched on two hands. Maybe that makes me not a fair judge of what great acting is, but when I watched Jimmy Smits on 'Dexter', I saw acting turned into legitimate artwork. I know it's a show and not a movie, and that Oscars are only given for movies, but I will say that Oscars have been given to actors giving lesser performances than this.

I wish there was a way to send actors a "my compliments to the chef"-style compliment, because I'd love for Mr. Smits to know that I was floored by his performance on 'Dexter'.
